This is a guided independent research project to demonstrate the students skills in the use of research methods and design. The research process normally includes description of the problem and purpose of study; limitations/delimitations, literature review; research methodology, data collection, data presentation and analysis; conclusions, implications and/or recommendations leading to a paper appropriate for professional publication and/or presentation. (Length 25 -30 pages, not including appendix and references).

Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.     Apply specialist knowledge in the area of their research.

2.     Initiate research design and formulate viable research questions

3.     Design, conduct and report sustained and original research

4.     Analyze, evaluate and synthesize research-based and scholarly literature

5.     Present research findings and argument in a suitably structured and sequenced paper of publishable quality that conforms to the protocols of academic presentation and research practice.

6.     Demonstrate the ability to critique literature and conduct analyses at Masters level

 


Synopsis

This subject focuses on the concept of strategy formulation and implementation by exploring the functions and nature of general management. The course serves as an opportunity to develop skills for strategic thinking and analysis, leadership, communication, teamwork, and cross-functional integration. Students learn about corporate and business planning and the implementation of organizational change through structures, systems and people. The approach adopted includes lectures, case analyses and action learning through group efforts.

Through successful completion of this subject students will be able to:

1.       Critically discuss and illustrate a range of strategic management theories, concepts and models.

2.        Analyze an organizations internal and external strategically relevant environments by applying appropriate theories, models and heuristics.

3.       Think strategically about an organisation, its present business position, its long-term direction, its resource and competitive capabilities, the effectiveness of its strategy, and its opportunities for gaining sustainable competitive advantage

4.       Utilise strategic management tools to conduct strategic analysis of organisations in a variety of industries and competitive situations and understand the challenges and opportunities of the global market environment.

5.       Develop and present a critically reflective, well-structured case analysis.
